Relay Settings: how to use it
Relay Settings reads, checks, edits, compares and draws protective relay settings in the browser. It is built for SEL relays (the files and terminal output that relays and acSELerator QuickSet® SEL-5030 use) and shows Beckwith setpoint reports. Everything runs on this computer: files are read and written here and nothing is uploaded.
Quick start
- Open the settings: drag files onto the page or use Open. Several files at once are fine (for example CFG.TXT with every SET_*.TXT, or a whole .zip).
- Pick a class on the left (Global, Group 1, Logic 1, ...). Each setting shows the manual's prompt and range and a check mark: ! outside the range, ? not in the manual's list. Select a setting to see its source page, a picture of the element, where it is used in logic, and to add a note.
- Change values in place. Changed settings are marked ●. Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo.
- Look at Setpoint graphics, TCC and Logic to see what the settings do.
- Export the result: SEL settings files, SET_ALL.TXT, the opened .rdb or files with only the changed values edited, a list of terminal SET steps for the changes, CSV, or a vector Download PDF of any tab. Save project keeps all open relays, notes and versions in one .json file.
Files it reads
| File | Where it comes from | Notes |
|---|---|---|
SET_ALL.TXT, SET_1.TXT, SET_G.TXT, SET_L1.TXT, SET_P1.TXT ... | Relay file transfer (FILE READ, FTP) or support software | [class] sections with NAME,"value" lines; [INFO] gives RELAYTYPE, FID and part number. |
CFG.TXT | Relay | Read for the model and firmware identification (opened together with the SET files). |
.rdb | acSELerator QuickSet relay database | An OLE compound file. Every settings stream inside is read; each relay in the database opens as its own relay. Export writes the database back with only the changed values edited. |
Terminal capture (.txt or Paste) | SHO, SHO L, SHO G, SHO P, SHO R, SHO F ... or an event report | Both NAME := value (newer relays) and NAME =value (older relays). Headings and SHO commands decide the class; long SELOGIC lines that wrap are joined. |
.csv | Spreadsheets | Columns Class, Setting, Value (header names are recognised). |
.zip | Any of the above, zipped | Opened entry by entry. |
| Beckwith setpoint report | IPScom printout or a settings table copied out of a PDF | Function, description, setting and units, one value per line or tab-separated, or CSV. Viewed on the Beckwith tab; IPScom binary data files are not read. |
Project .json | Save project | All relays with their loaded values (for change tracking), notes and versions. |
Compared with QuickSet
| QuickSet feature | Here |
|---|---|
| Settings editor with logical groups, range checks and hidden unused settings | Yes: prompts, ranges, defaults and "hidden if" rules come from the Settings Sheets of 14 SEL instruction manuals; hidden settings are greyed or filtered. |
| Read / send settings over a serial or Ethernet connection | Not directly. Read: paste a terminal capture or open the relay's SET files. Send: export the SEL settings files, or the terminal SET steps for the changes for a technician to enter. |
| Settings database (.rdb) | Open, edit and save back. Creating a new .rdb from scratch is not offered (QuickSet adds its own records). |
| Compare, merge and convert | Compare any two open relays or a relay with a saved version, copy single values or all differences either way. Converting between models copies the settings with the same names (check the result against the target model's ranges). |
| Version history | Versions (Settings tab) saves snapshots with a note in the project file; compare or restore them. |
| Comments on settings and reports | Notes on any setting; vector PDF reports of every tab; CSV and text exports. |
| Graphical settings and graphical logic | Setpoint graphics for 50/51, 87, 21, 27/59, 81, 24 and 79; every SELOGIC equation drawn as gates with a cross-reference and a simulator. Logic is read and drawn, not edited graphically (edit the equation text). |
| Design templates, HMI, event analysis, firmware loader | Not in this revision. |
Setpoint graphics and TCC
Each picture is drawn from the active group. Overcurrent elements are found by their setting names (51P1P/C/TD, 51G..., 50P1P with 50P1D or 67P1D ...) and their CT ratio (CTR, CTRN, CTR1/CTR2 for winding elements). Curve equations and coefficients come from the shared Kewo relay library (source-checked candidate records, per model; generic SEL coefficients are used and labelled when a model has no enabled record). Times are nominal element times: constant time adders and minimum response settings are included, breaker interrupting time is not. The TCC tab combines elements of several relays referred to one voltage, with IEEE C57.109 transformer through-fault curves, ICEA P-32-382 cable limits, inrush points and fault currents.
Logic
Equations are parsed in both SELOGIC forms: words (AND, OR, NOT, R_TRIG, F_TRIG) and the older symbols (+ OR, * AND, ! NOT, / rising edge, \ falling edge). Click an input to see where it comes from and where else it is used. Simulate lets you switch inputs (protection elements, contact inputs, pushbuttons) and shows the results (TRIP, CLOSE, outputs, latches, SELOGIC timers) in steady state: timers are taken as timed out and latches keep their state, so it shows the logic paths, not timing.
Typical settings
The helper turns equipment data into starting values with the reasoning shown: feeder and cable (load and sensitivity margins, coordination with the downstream device, cable short-circuit limit), transformer (overcurrent below the C57.109 curve and above inrush, SEL-787 differential defaults and TAP check), and line distance (80/120 % zones, k0, load encroachment, quadrilateral resistive reach). Apply writes them to an open relay or a new one (one undo step). They are not a coordination study.
Limits and care
- Checks use the manual editions in the source register; firmware differences, part-number options and the relay's own interdependency checks are not modelled. The relay is the final check when settings are sent.
- The settings files this tool writes follow the format the relays print; they have not been sent to a relay or opened in QuickSet in testing for this revision.
- Always review exported settings before use, and keep the as-found settings.
