Overview

Kewo Engineering provide engineering design services for the City of Anaheim Public Utilities Department (APUD) for citywide upgrades to overhead electrical infrastructure, comprising of approximately 480 electric utility poles, 260 distribution transformers, and associated facilities. The project focuses on improving the reliability and safety of Anaheim’s electrical distribution system by assessing and designing upgrades for overhead transformers, poles, and associated electrical facilities. 

 Kewo Engineering’s responsibilities included the following:  

  • Desktop Review of APU’s construction standards, inventory maps, circuit maps, easements for electrical facilities, and customer load data 
  • Field inspections 
    • Conducted field inspections of 380+ electrical poles across 17 grid maps 
    • Identified discrepancies between existing mapped data and actual field conditions 
    • Conducted site photography using a drone, operated by our FAA-certified drone pilots 
  • Customer Outreach and Engagement 
    • Identified customers affected by overhead electrical infrastructure upgrades 
    • Engaged with impacted customers to explain scope of work and project benefits 
    • Addressed customer inquiries and concerns relating to the project 
  • Overhead Electrical Construction Plans  
    • Developed construction design plans for overhead electrical infrastructure, including pole replacements, transformer upgrades, and easements and ROWs 
    • Designed systems adhering to APUD standards and GO95 
    • Prepared materials list 
    • Branchline Fuse Calculation for each area in 17 grid maps 
    • Added approximately 70 poles for undersized transformers 
  • Pole Wind Loading Calculation 
    • Performed wind loading calculations using OCalc to ensure all poles met City and safety standards 
  • Joint Pole Agreement 
    • Review existing JPAs to understand the terms, responsibilities, and any specific requirements or restrictions. 
  • Permitting 
    • Navigate the permitting process and minimize potential delays, ensuring all necessary permits are obtained promptly. 
  • Construction Support 2025 
    • Regular site inspections to monitor progress. 
    • Providing technical guidance to resolve design or construction-related issues. 
    • Verifying that materials, equipment, and methods meet project specifications.
